What is white noise?
White noise is a type of noise that is produced by combining sounds of all different frequencies together. The sound of white noise we hear as humans is the sound of all the frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. So you're literally hearing around 20,000 different tones of sound all at the same time. White noise works by reducing the difference between background sounds and a “peak” sound, like a peaceful rhythem, giving you a better chance to sleep through it undisturbed. If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, listening a white noise could help you calm down and fall asleep quickly.
This is what white noise sounds like, you can tell us your favorite white noise in the comment:
How does white noise work?
Since white noise contains all the different frequencies it has the capability to mask other sounds.
Just imagine you’re sitting in a cafe. You’ll be able to pick out the individual voices of your companions, and perhaps those on nearby tables.
But now imagine you're sitting in a busy restaurant, people all talking at the same time, you may feel noisy. However, if you’re listening to white noise, any other sounds become background noise and you won’t notice it.
What the benefits of white noise?
1. Aid Sleep
One of the benefit of white noise is soothing for sleeping. On one hand, it distracts the brain. A completely quiet room may cause the potential listener to stay alert, listening for any trace of sound. But white noise gives the mind something to focus on without the distraction of music or words. On the other hand, it also helps prevent sudden noises during the night from surprising and waking the sleeper, especially for babies.
2. Improve Concentration
White noise can actually improve concentration during your work time. With regular white noise pumped in, you may not tempted to make some noise to fill the quiet, and you can also more easily ignore sounds like the phone calls. White noise can be a better alternative than music, as even music without lyrics has more of a potential to distract workers than white noise.
3. Promotes relaxation
Many people find the sound of oceans, rivers, waterfalls and rain relaxing and peaceful. Most people states that one of the joys of being in nature is listening to the sounds.
So the next time you’re feeling stressed, why not have a listen to the sound of an ocean or waterfall and see if it helps you unwind?
Is white noise OK for babies?
Babies may be able to fall asleep faster with white noise in the background. White noise can block out household noise and some infant white noise machines creates an ideal sleeping environment which may be comforting for newborns.
